Tracking System Co. Picks Cy Young Winners

Pitching Statistics Vs. Wins

Cy_YoungAs the September call ups begin making their major league debuts and divisional contenders begin preparing for the final stretch run to the postseason, many sports writers and fans are all looking towards award season. Obviously, most people are familiar with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award which is given to the "best" player from both the National League and American League, but the award that embodies pitching is known as the Cy Young Award. Although there is still a few weeks to play before the 162 game season is officially over, our GPS tracking system editors are ready to pick who they believe is most deserving of the awards for best pitcher.

This year both leagues have a butt-load of good pitching, and the fact that there has been an abnormal amount of no-hitters in the 2010 MLB season provides evidence of that. In year's past, selecting the Cy Young winner was often a one or two horse race, but this year there are literally 6 or 7 guys who could make legitimate cases for deserving the award. After crunching the numbers for the National League candidates and reviewing numerous pitching stats, our vehicle tracking experts believe that the NL Cy Young award should go to Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Why "Doc" Halladay?

Roy Halladay was picked up by the Phillies during the off-season from the Toronto Blue Jays, and when he came to the east coast he was looked upon as the main guy. The media, fans and city all put an enormous amount of pressure on Doc, and how did he respond? Halladay threw a perfect game (in a 1-0 ball game), sits in second place for most wins by a pitcher in the league, has pitched numerous complete games to save the bullpen, has an ERA in the top 7, is on pace for a 200 K season and he achieved all of this while pitching most of his games in what is viewed as a "hitter's ballpark"

American League

The winner of the American League Cy Young will most certainly deserve the award, but this year the AL has more than a few worthy contenders for the pitching award. First of all, there is CC Sabathia, a big pitcher who leads the league in wins, and is the ace of the best team in baseball.... money can buy. Then there is David Price, a young talent who has been racking up wins for an over-achieving Tampa club. Although both Sabathia and Price are great candidates, our fleet management experts believe that the Cy Young should go to the best pitcher, regardless of whether or not there team makes it to October. This is why we believe Felix "King" Hernandez should win.

Hernandez has some of the most filthy stuff in the league, with an above-average fastball and breaking ball that makes major league hitters look like drunken softball players (sorry softball guys). Hernandez is only a fraction off the league-lead in ERA, sits near the top in strike outs per 9 for a starter, has given up only one earned run in his past 35+ innings pitched, ranks firs in innings pitched with over 220 innings, is in the top 5 in complete games and he has done all of this with a Seattle squad who is at the bottom of the league in offense. If Hernandez were on the Yankees, Red Sox or some other offensive powerhouse he would easily be a 20-game winner.
